Português e de Portugal. Hoje vou dizer-vos como
dizer “cheers” em Português e vou-vos dar algum
vocabulário relacionado com o tema. Fiquem até ao
final, porque eu vou partilhar uma superstição
portuguesa em relação a este tema.
Agora, vamos lá ao nosso tópico de hoje!
Em Portugal, assim como em vários outros países,
as pessoas gostam de estar juntas e de celebrar
umas com as outras. Infelizmente, isso não tem
sido muito possível com o covid, mas espero que aos
poucos possamos todos voltar ao normal.
Já agora, desejo-vos a todos muita saúde, nestes
tempos difíceis. Ah, e podemos começar por aqui.
Sabem o que significa a palavra “saúde”?
“Saúde” significa “Health” e nós usamos esta palavra
em frases como a que eu disse antes -
“desejo-vos muita saúde”, mas também a
utilizamos em outros contextos. Vamos ver!
De facto, nós utilizamos esta palavra quando:
- alguém espirra
Espirrar é “to sneeze” em Inglês.
Se vocês espirrarem - atchim - em Portugal,
é provável que alguém vos diga: saúde!
Outra palavra que também podem dizer
alternativamente é “santinho”.
Com isto, a outra pessoa está a desejar-vos saúde.
Por outro lado, também se pode usar
esta mesma palavra quando:
- fazemos um brinde
O que é fazer um brinde ou brindar?
Fazer um brinde ou brindar é “to make a toast”.
Quando algo muito positivo acontece, ou quando
estamos a celebrar juntos, nós podemos bater
com os copos uns nos outros e dizer “saúde”.
Nós podemos brindar ao sucesso de alguma
coisa ou de alguém, brindar porque alguém faz anos,
brindar porque estamos simplesmente com amigos
e estamos felizes. É só bater com o copo e dizer
“saúde”. Mais uma vez estamos a desejar boa
saúde para aquilo que queremos ou para alguém
que conhecemos.
Uma outra forma de dizer “cheers” em Português
é “Tchin-tchin” (ou “chin-chin”). Eu já ouvi dizer
que isto é um bocado estranho de dizer em certos
países asiáticos... se forem de algum desses países
digam-nos nos comentários abaixo... mas em
Portugal apenas significa que estamos a
brindar a alguém ou a alguma coisa.
Há também outra possibilidade: nós também
podemos dizer “à tua” ou “à sua”, “à nossa”
ou “à vossa”. Isto literalmente significa “to yours”
ou “to ours”, porque é uma forma reduzida
de dizer “à tua saúde” ou “à sua saúde”
ou “à vossa saúde” ou “à nossa saúde”.
Por vezes podemos também dizer “saúdinha”,
que é apenas uma forma mais fofinha e
informal de dizer “saúde”.
Digam-me lá se já celebraram muitas coisas com
os vossos amigos portugueses, enquanto bebiam
um bom vinho do Porto ou um vinho do Douro?
E se sim, utilizaram alguma destas
palavras ou estão a planear utilizar?
Mas antes de terminar, queria partilhar
convosco a tal superstição portuguesa:
Em Portugal, nós não brindamos com água.
Diz-se que não é bom. Pode ser com vinho,
sumo ou limonada, ou qualquer outra coisa.
Mas não com água.

Do you know what the word “saúde” means?
“Saúde” means “Health” and we use this word
in sentences like the one I said before -
“I wish you good health”, but we also
use it in other contexts. Let's see!
In fact, we use this word when:
- someone sneezes
Espirrar is “to sneeze” in English.
If you sneeze - ahchoo - in Portugal,
someone is likely to say: Bless you!
Another word that you can also say
alternatively is "santinho".
With this, the other person is wishing you health.
On the other hand, you can also use
this same word when:
- you make a toast
What does “fazer um brinde” or “brindar" mean?
“Fazer um brinde” or “brindar” is “to make a toast”.
When something very positive happens, or when
celebrating together, we can hit
our glasses against each other and say “cheers”.
We can toast to the success of something
or someone, toast because someone has a birthday,
toast because we are simply with friends
and we are happy. Just hit the glass and say
“cheers”. Once again we are wishing good
health for what we want or for someone
we know.
Another way of saying “cheers” in Portuguese
is “Tchin-tchin” (or “chin-chin”). I've heard that
this is a bit strange to say in certain
Asian countries... if you are from any of those countries
let us know in the comments below... but in
Portugal it just means that we are
toasting someone or something.
There is also another possibility: we can also
say “à tua” or “à sua”, “à nossa”
or “à vossa”. This literally means “to yours”
or “to ours”, because it's a short form
of saying “to your health”
or “to our health”.
Sometimes we can also say “saúdinha”,
which is just a softer and more
informal way of saying “health”.
