5 MUST-DO Things in PORTO now that the Days are STILL WARM

Olá! Neste episódio, gostaria de vos falar sobre 5 coisas

que não podem perder quando vierem visitar o Porto.

Devo dizer-vos que fazer este

episódio não foi muito fácil

para mim, porque existem tantos locais bonitos na

minha linda e fantástica cidade - o Porto, que

escolher apenas cinco é uma missão quase

impossível. No entanto, eu finalmente consegui!

E agora quero partilhá-los convosco, para que

conheçam estes lindos locais se e quando vierem

ao Porto, Portugal. Venham comigo nesta aventura!

Torre dos Clérigos

A torre mais alta do Porto, é definitivamente

imperdível! Esta torre faz parte do complexo dos

Clérigos. Foi projectada pelo arquiteto Nicolau

Nasoni e construída entre os anos 1754 e 1763.

A irmandade dos Clérigos há muito desejava que esta

torre fosse construída e finalmente

o seu desejo foi concretizado!

Hoje em dia, esta torre - com mais de 200 degraus

e alguns sinos esplêndidos que tocam a cada hora -

é um dos monumentos mais interessantes da cidade

e não podem deixar de fazer uma visita e subir ao

topo. De lá, terão uma vista de tirar o fôlego desta

cidade centenária. Conseguirão ver o rio e o mar, os

belos telhados das casas antigas e o movimento de

pessoas e carros lá em baixo. Acreditem em mim,

valerá a pena (se não conseguirem subir as escadas,

há um elevador também).

Lá dentro, também poderão fazer uma visita

à igreja e ao museu, onde a história desta torre será

explicada em detalhe! Quando estiverem no Porto,

se quiserem encontrar a Torre dos Clérigos, basta

olhar para cima e provavelmente conseguirão

avistá-la desde onde se encontram, pois é bastante

visível de muitos pontos

diferentes da cidade e arredores!

Ponte da Arrábida

Se vierem ao Porto, com certeza não podem deixar

de visitar a Ponte da Arrábida. Mas devem estar a

pensar... isso não é apenas uma ponte? Sim!

Têm razão! Mas esta ponte tem muito a oferecer.

Projetada por Edgar Cardoso, demorou cerca de

4 anos a ser construída - de 1959 a 1963. A Ponte da

Arrábida é uma ponte de betão que tem um arco

muito grande. Na verdade, é tão grande que durante

anos foi o maior da Europa e as pessoas pensaram

que ia cair a qualquer momento por causa da falta

de suporte intermediário (ou o que parecia ser falta

de suporte). Felizmente, não caiu, e hoje é um

grande símbolo da brilhante arquitectura e

engenharia portuenses. Mas esta ponte tem muito

mais a oferecer! Desde 2016, uma empresa chamada

Porto Bridge Climb oferece a possibilidade de subir o

arco da ponte até ao meio, mesmo por baixo do local

por onde passam os carros a toda a velocidade.

Sim, pode parecer estranho, mas na verdade é uma

uma experiência muito fixe. Para chegar ao topo,

é preciso subir algumas escadas que vos levarão

a uma altura equivalente a um prédio de 23 andares.

Mas não se preocupem! É seguro, desde que sigam

as orientações e a vista lá em cima é incrível!

Recomendo que vão ao final da tarde para verem o

belo pôr-do-sol! Foi o que eu fiz e foi maravilhoso!

Além disso, no topo terão uma surpresa… Não vou

dizer exatamente qual é a surpresa, mas se gostam

de chocolate e vinho, tenho a

certeza de que vão gostar!

Parque da Cidade

Agora que o tempo ainda está bom, devem

definitivamente ir ao Parque da Cidade. Este parque

é muito grande e pode-se dizer que é

o pulmão da nossa cidade. Se gostam de Natureza,

este é o local para estar quando estiverem no Porto.

Podem ver os animais -

pássaros e outros pequenos animais -

ou levar o vosso próprio animal de

estimação para um passeio.

O parque tem várias

entradas, sendo uma delas pela praia de Matosinhos.

Na verdade, este é o único parque que conheço que

se estende até ao mar - é realmente ótimo!

Durante a primavera e o verão, também existem

algumas atividades neste local. Há espetáculos e

durante a semana dedicada aos alunos universitários,

na primeira semana de maio - também conhecida

como a semana da Queima das Fitas - o local fica

lotado de jovens, numa área do parque chamada

Queimódromo. Nos últimos dois anos, devido ao

Covid, esta semana e estes eventos não se

realizaram, mas antes do Covid era assim!

Praia dos Ingleses

Praia dos Ingleses, ou “the beach of the English”,

se traduzirem literalmente, é assim chamada porque

antigamente os ingleses eram as pessoas que mais

frequentavam este lugar nos dias quentes.

Como devem saber, o Porto sempre teve uma grande

relação com o Reino Unido por causa do negócio do

Vinho do Porto, e muitos britânicos vieram para

Portugal para se estabelecerem. Assim, começaram

a usufruir desta praia neste local muito interessante e

doce - a Foz do Douro. Percebendo isso, os

portugueses passaram a batizar esta praia de Praia

dos Ingleses. No coração de um dos locais mais ricos

do Porto - a Foz - onde o rio encontra o mar, esta

zona é realmente um bom local se pretenderem

descansar ou passear junto à praia. Com os seus

cafés e restaurantes, podem sentar-se e desfrutar do

vosso café com uma bela vista.

Se gostam de nadar, podem fazê-lo também,

pois a Praia dos Ingleses é uma praia de areia.

Mas não saltem de cabeça para a água, pois podem

ter um encontro desagradável com as rochas. Pode

ser bastante perigoso na maré alta, pois as rochas

escondem-se debaixo de água, por isso tenham

cuidado. Em suma, este é um local com um ambiente

agradável e uma vista deslumbrante, então acho que

podem realmente aproveitar um bom dia lá! Mas

se tiverem oportunidade, visitem também

as outras praias do Porto e Gaia.

Afurada

Sendo uma das partes mais antigas do Porto,

a Afurada não é realmente no Porto. Confuso, eu sei.

Mas deixem-me explicar. Esta pequena vila de

pescadores fica em Vila Nova de Gaia, do outro lado

do Rio Douro (o rio que separa o Porto de Gaia).

No entanto, por estarem tão próximas, consideramos

Gaia uma parte do Porto. Portanto, acredito que

posso adicionar este local a esta lista.

A Afurada, como disse antes, é uma antiga vila de

pescadores com casinhas lindas onde se pode comer

um dos melhores peixes da cidade. Aliás, todos os

dias pela manhã os pescadores trazem o peixe do

mar que vai ser vendido nos vários restaurantes da

Afurada. Poderão também vivenciar aqui um dos

locais mais típicos e pitorescos do Porto. As pessoas

ainda moram aqui como antigamente e podem até

ver as mulheres a lavar a roupa no tanque comum

que lá existe. Depois, também é bonito de ver essas

roupas penduradas ao pé dos barcos. De facto, essa

imagem dá origem a algumas das melhores

fotografias deste local! Neste lugar a modernidade

anda de mãos dadas com a antiguidade e a Afurada

tem uma nova Marina onde se podem ver grandes e

bonitos barcos e iates. Eles vêm de todo o mundo!

Para chegar a esta simpática vila, apanhem o barco

no Porto ou atravessem a Ponte D. Luís. Não importa

como o façam, se forem ao Porto, não deixem

de visitar a Afurada!

Em conclusão, o Porto é bonito em todas as

estações, mas agora que os dias ainda estão

quentes, estes locais parecem boas escolhas para

desfrutar da vossa estadia aqui.

Hello! In this episode, I would like to tell you about 5 things

that you can't miss when you come to visit Porto.

I have to tell you, making this

episode was not really easy

for me, because there are so many nice spots in

my beautiful, amazing city – Porto, that

choosing only five is almost an impossible mission.

However, I finally made it!

And now I want to share them with you, so

you check out these beautiful places if and when you come

to Porto, Portugal. Come with me in this adventure!

Clérigos Tower

The highest tower in Porto, it is definitely

a must-see! This tower is part of the Clérigos complex.

It was projected by the architect Nicolau

Nasoni and built between the years 1754 and 1763.

The brotherhood of Clérigos had long wished for this

tower to be built and finally

their wish was made true!

Nowadays, this tower – which has more than 200 steps

and some splendid bells that ring every hour –

is one of the most interesting monuments of the city

and you should definitely pay it a visit and climb to the

top. From there, you will have a breath-taking view of this

century-old city. You will see the river and the sea, the

beautiful roofs of the ancient houses and the movement of

people and cars down below. Believe me,

it will be worth it (if you can’t climb the stairs,

there is an elevator too).

Inside, you can also pay a visit to

the church and the museum, where the history of this tower will

be explained to you in detail! When in Porto,

if you want to find the Clérigos tower, just

look up and you will probably be able to

spot it from the place you are as it is quite

visible from many different spots

in and around the city!

Arrábida Bridge

If you come to Porto, you definitely have to go

pay a visit to Arrabida Bridge. But you must be

thinking… isn’t this just a bridge? Yes!

You are right! But this bridge has a lot to offer.

Designed by Edgar Cardoso, it took around

4 years to be built – from 1959 to 1963. Arrábida

Bridge is a concrete bridge that has a very big arch.

It is actually so big that for

years it was the biggest in Europe and people thought

it was going to fall at any time because of the lack

of middle support (or what it seemed as lack

of support). Luckily, it did not fall and nowadays it is a

very big symbol of brilliant architecture and

engineering in Porto. But this bridge has a lot

more to offer! Since 2016, a company called

Porto Bridge Climb has been offering the possibility to climb the

arch of the bridge up until the middle part, right under the place

where cars go by furiously.

Yes, it may sound weird, but it is actually a

really cool experience. To reach the top,

you need to climb through some stairs that will go

as high as the equivalent to a 23 story building.

But do not worry! It is really safe as long as you follow

the guidelines and the view up there is amazing!

I recommend you go at the end of the afternoon so you can see

the sunset! That is what I did and it was wonderful!

Furthermore, at the top you will be surprised… I won't

tell you exactly what the surprise is, but if you like

chocolate and wine, I am

sure you will enjoy it!

Porto City Park

While the weather is still good, you should

definitely go to Porto City Park. This park

is really big and you can say it is

the lung of our city. If you like Nature,

this is the place to be when in Porto.

You can see the animals -

birds and other small animals -

or take your own pet

for a stroll.

There are several entrances

to the park, and one of them is through the beach in Matosinhos.

In fact, this is the only park I know that

extends to the sea – it is really great!

During spring and summer, there are also

some activities in this place. There are concerts and

during the student’s week,

in the first week of May – also know

as Queima das Fitas – this place gets

filled with students, in an area of the park called

Queimódromo. In the last two years, due to

Covid, this week and these events did not

take place, but before Covid it was like this!

Praia dos Ingleses

Praia dos Ingleses, or “the beach of the English”,

if you translate it literally, is called this way, because

in the old days the English were the people that most

used this place during the warm days.

As you may know, Porto has always have a big

relationship with the UK because of the Port Wine business

and many Brits came to

Portugal to settle. Therefore, they started

making use of this beach at this very interesting and

sweet place – Foz do Douro. Noticing this, the

Portuguese started naming this beach as Praia

dos Ingleses. In the heart of one of the richest places

in Porto – Foz – where the river meets the sea, this

area is really a good place if you want to

rest or take walks along the beach. With its many

cafes and restaurants, you can sit and enjoy

your coffee with a view.

If you like swimming, you can,

as Praia dos Ingleses is a sandy beach.

But do not jump in the water head first, as you may

have an unpleasant encounter with the rocks. It

can be rather dangerous in high tides, as the rocks

hide under the water, so be

careful. All in all, this is a place with a pleasant environment

and an amazing view, so I think you

can really enjoy a nice day in there! But

if you have an opportunity, do visit

the other beaches in Porto and Gaia too.

Afurada

Being one of the oldest parts of Porto,

Afurada is not really in Porto. Confusing, I know.

But let me explain. This little

fishermen’s village is in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the other side

of the Rio Douro (the river that separates Porto from Gaia).

However, since they are so close to each other, we consider

Gaia a part of Porto. Therefore, I believe

I can add this place to this list.

Afurada, as I said before is an old fishermen’s village

with little, cute houses where you can eat some

of the best fish in town. In fact, every

day in the morning the fishermen bring the fish from the

sea that will be sold in Afurada’s many restaurants.

You will also be able to experience here one of the

most typical and picturesque places in Porto. People

still live here as in older times and you can even

see the women washing clothes in the common water tank

of the village. They then also hang these

clothes outside, which originates

some of the best

pictures in this place! In this place, modernity goes

hand in hand with the antique and Afurada

has a new Marina where you can see some big and

nice boats and yachts. They come from all over the world!

To get to this cute village, take the boat

from Porto or cross Ponte D. Luís. No matter

how you do it, if you visit Porto, make sure

to visit Afurada!

In conclusion, Porto is beautiful in all

seasons, but now that the days are still

warm, these places seem like good choices to

enjoy your time here.

But there are many more!
