Do you know these FAMOUS PORTUGUESE PEOPLE?

PORTUGUESE:

Olá! Hoje vou falar-vos de algumas pessoas famosas

que são portuguesas, ou que, pelo menos, têm

ascendência portuguesa. Algumas destas pessoas

são mais conhecidas, em geral, outras menos, mas

todas têm um papel muito importante nas suas

diversas áreas.

Venham daí e vamos descobrir quem são!

Mas antes de começarmos gostava de vos pedir que

Vamos começar pelo desporto. No mundo do futebol

há duas pessoas, pelo menos, que muita gente

conhece! A primeira pessoa de quem vou falar

é Cristiano Ronaldo. O seu nome completo é

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro e ele é um

futebolista profissional. Ele nasceu na Madeira e

começou a jogar futebol muito cedo. Ele começou a

sua carreira nos seniores do clube português

Sporting Clube de Portugal antes de ter completado a

maioridade. Em 2003, aos 18 anos, foi contratado

pelo Manchester United, tendo entretanto passado

por outros clubes de renome internacional, como o

Real Madrid e a Juventus. Ele é considerado por

muitos como o melhor jogador de futebol do mundo e

já ganhou vários prémios como o prémio de Melhor

Jogador da UEFA na Europa e a Bota de Ouro.

Aos 36 anos, Ronaldo continua a ser uma figura de

destaque no mundo do futebol e ainda não se sabe

quando deixará de jogar…

A outra figura conhecida do mundo do futebol

é o treinador José Mourinho. Atualmente,

treina o Roma, mas já passou por vários clubes

como o FC Porto, o Chelsea, o Internazionale,

o Manchester United e o Tottenham, entre outros.

Em 2011, foi considerado o melhor treinador do

mundo pela FIFA, e em 2015 foi nomeado Treinador

Português do Século pela Federação Portuguesa

de Futebol. Apesar do seu sucesso, muitos

consideram José Mourinho um pouco arrogante, por

vezes, já que ele até se

auto-nomeou como o “Special One”.

No entanto, não há que enganar:

José Mourinho é um grande treinador de futebol e já

conquistou vários títulos - e um desses títulos foi a

taça da Liga dos Campeões, em 2004, com o meu

 querido clube de futebol - o Futebol Clube do Porto.

Passando agora para o mundo da música,

tenho que mencionar duas pessoas.

A primeira pessoa é a cantora de fado Mariza.

Eu sei que muitos de vocês a conhecem.

Fado é um estilo de música tipicamente português,

que fala de saudade, mas não só, e que foi

reconhecido como Património Cultural e Imaterial

da Humanidade pela UNESCO. A cantora Mariza

começou a cantar em Lisboa, para pequenos grupos

de admiradores, mas depressa se tornou um

fenómeno mundial. Ela já cantou em Nova Iorque,

Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney e em muitos outros locais

mundialmente famosos. O jornal “The Guardian” já

a considerou “uma diva da música do mundo” e há

vários outros músicos que apreciam a sua forma de

cantar e que até já analisaram a forma como

ela canta. Podem ver aqui em cima um

vídeo de análise à forma de cantar de Mariza.

É muito interessante.

A segunda pessoa a considerar nesta categoria

é Salvador Sobral. O seu nome completo é Salvador

Thiam Vilar Braamcamp Sobral e é o único

músico representante de Portugal a vencer o Festival

da Eurovisão da Canção. Isto aconteceu em 2017,

quando ele interpretou a canção “Amar pelos Dois”,

escrita pela sua irmã, Luísa Sobral.

A canção foi apreciada por muita gente,

tanto em Portugal, como no estrangeiro e eu,

pessoalmente, adoro-a! Salvador Sobral começou a

sua carreira bem cedo e passou pelo programa

Ídolos. Ele tem vindo a tornar-se num músico muito

completo e até hoje faz trabalhos musicais muito

bons e dignos de serem ouvidos. Ele tem uma

personalidade bastante engraçada, também, e isso

viu-se na sua forma de interpretar a música

“Amar pelos Dois”, no Festival da Canção, em 2017.

Digam-me nos comentários se gostam dessa música

e se a conhecem.

Outros dois cantores que quero mencionar, são dois

cantores que têm ascendência portuguesa. São eles:

Nelly Furtado. Ela é uma cantora, compositora e atriz

luso-canadiana. É filha de emigrantes portugueses.

Os seus pais são naturais da freguesia da

Ponta Garça, em São Miguel, nos Açores.

Nelly Furtado esforça-se por falar Português e manter

as suas raízes e até já participou em eventos

relacionados com Portugal. Foi ela que

compôs e cantou a música oficial do Euro 2004 de

Futebol “Força”. Ela também tem um álbum que se

chama Folklore e que é considerado o álbum mais

alternativo de Nelly. Nele, são usados instrumentos

indígenas canadianos, e muitas das

músicas têm trechos em Português.

O outro cantor de ascendência portuguesa que

quero mencionar é Shawn Mendes. Ele é conhecido

por cantar músicas como “Stitches” ou “In my Blood”.

Shawn Mendes é filho de mãe inglesa e de um

empresário chamado Manuel Mendes que nasceu no

Algarve. Eu aprecio Shawn Mendes, não só pela

música que faz, mas também porque ele fala

abertamente dos seus problemas mentais, já que

sofre de um transtorno de ansiedade. A sua

música “In my Blood” fala sobre isso mesmo.

No mundo do cinema (e TV), tenho também

que mencionar algumas celebridades.

A primeira pessoa que quero mencionar é

Daniela Ruah. Daniela Ruah tem dupla

nacionalidade: ela é portuguesa e norte-americana.

Tendo nascido em Boston, Massachusetts, ela

manteve sempre uma grande ligação a Portugal,

até porque a sua família se mudou de novo para

Portugal quando ela tinha apenas 5 anos.

Enquanto em Portugal, a atriz portuguesa entrou

em várias telenovelas portuguesas, mas é mais

conhecida pelo seu papel em NCIS: Los Angeles,

onde interpreta o papel de Agente Especial Kensi

Blye. Neste momento, vive nos Estados Unidos, mas

eu sigo o Instagram dela e sei que ela vem

várias vezes a Portugal, onde também faz

trabalhos recorrentes. 

A segunda atriz que quero mencionar é

Maria de Medeiros. Apesar de talvez não ser tão

conhecida, Maria de Medeiros entrou num filme que

muitos de vocês devem conhecer: Pulp Fiction,

de Quentin Tarantino. Ela interpretou o papel de

Fabienne e contracenou com Bruce Willis, que fazia

de seu namorado no filme. Podem vê-la aqui em cima

nesse papel. Para além deste filme, Maria de

Medeiros fez várias longas-metragens,

curtas-metragens, teatro, e muito mais! Ela também

teve muitas nomeações, como por exemplo,

a de Artista da UNESCO para a Paz, em 2008. 

Para além destas duas pessoas, eu queria também

mencionar uma pessoa que eu admiro muito -

Catarina Furtado! Catarina Furtado é uma

apresentadora e atriz portuguesa. Já participou em

várias telenovelas e programas de TV e já apresentou

vários programas, tanto na RTP, como na SIC.

De momento, está a apresentar o seu novo programa

“É urgente o Amor” que baseia o seu nome no

poema de Eugénio de Andrade que eu vos

li neste vídeo. No entanto, e apesar de a sua carreira

ser excelente, destaca-se por muito mais: é,

desde 2000, Embaixadora da Boa Vontade do Fundo

das Nações Unidas para a População e é

fundadora e presidente da Associação Corações com

Coroa. Catarina realiza um trabalho de proximidade

em diferentes países, nas áreas da Saúde, incluindo

a sexual e reprodutiva, Igualdade de Género,

Violência sobre as Mulheres, Discriminação,

Planeamento Familiar, entre outras.

Ela também é co-autora

e apresentadora do programa

"Príncipes do Nada" da RTP que trata de temas

sobre os Direitos Humanos. Outro dos seus trabalhos

que eu mais gostei de ver chama-se

“Dar Vida sem Morrer”, onde a apresentadora

contactou com várias mulheres na Guiné-Bissau

e que contou com o apoio da Cooperação

Portuguesa. Esta série de documentários teve como

objetivo recolher apoio financeiro para programas de

redução da mortalidade materna e neonatal

em três localidades da Guiné-Bissau. Parte desta

informação foi retirada da internet, e eu vou deixar

o link aqui em baixo para que vocês possam

ler mais sobre esta grande mulher!

Além disso, ela é muito bonita!

Finalmente, não poderia deixar de falar sobre uma

pessoa que conheci em tempos. O nome dela é

Sara Sampaio e ela é uma modelo internacional.

Ela tornou-se conhecida depois de ganhar um

concurso muito conhecido aqui em Portugal dos

Cabelos Pantene, em 2007. Foi por volta dessa

época que eu me cruzei com ela, em Lisboa, através

de amigos comuns. Ela mostrou sempre ser uma

rapariga querida e com os pés bem assentes

no chão. Como ela nasceu no Porto, e eu também,

na altura demo-nos bem e eu cheguei a sair com ela

uma ou duas vezes, nas noites de Lisboa.

Entretanto, fomos perdendo o contacto, mas eu fui

sabendo da Sara, já que a sua popularidade foi

aumentando cada vez mais. Na sua carreira,

já foi fotografada para várias revistas como Vogue,

GQ, Elle e muitas mais. Ela também conseguiu o

trabalho que muitas modelos querem - ela foi uma

das Angels da Victoria’s Secret. Para além da moda,

Sara Sampaio também já fez sucesso no mundo da

música, tendo aparecido em alguns videoclipes

de cantores famosos. Apesar de se ter tornado

numa supermodelo, e de se ter mudado para Nova

Iorque, a atriz continua a visitar a família e os amigos

em Portugal, sendo que há pouco tempo celebrou

os seus 30 anos aqui no norte de Portugal.

E pronto, estas são algumas das celebridades

portuguesas que ainda estão no ativo e que penso

que é interessante que vocês conheçam.

Hi! Today I'm going to talk to you about some famous people

who are Portuguese, or at least have

Portuguese ancestry. Some of these people

are better known in general, others less so, but

they all play a very important role in their

various fields.

Let's start with sports. In the world of football

there are at least two people that are

very known. The first person I'm going to talk about

is Cristiano Ronaldo. His full name is

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro and he is a

professional footballer. He was born in Madeira and

started playing football at an early age. He started

his career in the seniors of the Portuguese club

Sporting Clube de Portugal before reaching

adulthood. In 2003, at the age of 18, he was signed

by Manchester United, having passed, meanwhile,

through other internationally renowned clubs, such as

Real Madrid and Juventus. He is considered by

many to be the best football player in the world and

has won numerous awards such as the UEFA Best

Player in Europe award and the Golden Boot.

At 36, Ronaldo remains a prominent figure in

the world of football and it remains to be seen

when he will stop playing…

The other well-known figure in the football world

is coach José Mourinho. Currently,

he coaches Roma, but has already worked for several clubs

such as FC Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale,

Manchester United and Tottenham, among others.

In 2011, he was considered the best coach in the

world by FIFA, and in 2015 he was named Portuguese Coach

of the Century by the Portuguese Football

Federation. Despite his success, many

consider José Mourinho a bit arrogant at

times, as he has even

named himself the “Special One”.

However, we can’t deny it:

José Mourinho is a great football coach and has already

won several titles - and one of those titles was the

Champions League cup, in 2004, with my

beloved football club - Futebol Clube do Porto.

Turning now to the music world,

I have to mention two people.

The first person is the fado singer Mariza.

I know many of you know her.

Fado is a typically Portuguese style of music,

which speaks of nostalgia, but not only, and which was

recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage

of Humanity by UNESCO. The singer Mariza

started singing in Lisbon, for small groups

of admirers, but quickly became a

worldwide phenomenon. She has sung in New York,

Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney and many other

world famous places. The newspaper “The Guardian” has

already considered her “a music diva of the world” and there are

several other musicians who appreciate her way of

singing and who have even analyzed the way

she sings. You can see a video above of an

analysis of Mariza's singing style.

It's very interesting.

The second person to consider in this category

is Salvador Sobral. His full name is Salvador

Thiam Vilar Braamcamp Sobral and he is the only

musician representing Portugal to win the Eurovision

Song Contest. This happened in 2017,

when he performed the song “Amar pelos Dois”,

written by his sister, Luísa Sobral.

Many people enjoyed this song thoroughly

both in Portugal and abroad and I,

personally, love it! Salvador Sobral started

his career very early and he also participated in the

Portuguese Idols TV show. He has become a very complete

musician and nowadays he makes very

good musical pieces worthy of being listened to. He has a

very funny personality, too, and that

shone through in the way he interpreted the song

“Amar pelos Dois” at Eurovision Song Contest in 2017.

Two other singers I want to mention are two

singers who have Portuguese ancestry. They are:

Nelly Furtado. She is a Portuguese-Canadian singer, songwriter

and actress. She is the daughter of Portuguese emigrants.

Her parents are from the parish of

Ponta Garça, in São Miguel, Azores.

Nelly Furtado always tries to speak Portuguese and maintain

her roots and has even participated in events

related to Portugal. She was the

one who composed and sang the official Euro 2004

football song “Força”. She also has an album

called Folklore which is considered Nelly's most

alternative album. In it, Canadian indigenous

instruments are used, and many of the

songs have excerpts in Portuguese.

The other singer of Portuguese descent that

I want to mention is Shawn Mendes. He is known

for singing songs like “Stitches” or “In my Blood”.

Shawn Mendes is the son of an English mother and a

businessman named Manuel Mendes who was born in the

Algarve. I appreciate Shawn Mendes, not only for the

music he makes, but also because he speaks

openly about his mental problems as he

suffers from an anxiety disorder. His

song “In my Blood” talks about that.

In the cinema (and TV) world, I also have

to mention some celebrities.

The first person I want to mention is

Daniela Ruah. Daniela Ruah has dual

nationality: she is Portuguese and American.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she

has always maintained a strong connection to Portugal,

especially because her family moved back to

Portugal when she was just 5 years old.

While in Portugal, the Portuguese actress participated

in several Portuguese soap operas, but is best

known for her role in NCIS: Los Angeles,

where she plays the role of Special Agent Kensi

Blye. At the moment, she lives in the United States, but

I follow her Instagram and I know that she comes

to Portugal often, and she also often

works here.

The second actress I want to mention is

Maria de Medeiros. Although perhaps not that

well known, Maria de Medeiros was in a movie that

many of you may know: Pulp Fiction,

by Quentin Tarantino. She played the role of

Fabienne and starred opposite Bruce Willis, who played

her boyfriend in the movie. You can see her up here

Medeiros made several feature films,

short films, theatre, and much more! She has also

had many nominations, such as

In addition to these two people, I would also like

to mention one person that I admire a lot -

Catarina Furtado! Catarina Furtado is a

Portuguese presenter and actress. She has participated in

several soap operas and TV shows and has been the hostess of

several TV shows, both on RTP and SIC.

At the moment, she is presenting her new program

“É Urgente o Amor” which bases its name on

the poem by Eugénio de Andrade that I read to you

in this video. However, and despite her excellent career,

she stands out for much more: she has been,

since 2000, a Goodwill Ambassador for the United

Nations Population Fund and is

founder and president of Associação Corações com

Coroa. Catarina carries out outreach work

in different countries, in the areas of Health, including

sexual and reproductive, Gender Equality,

Violence against Women, Discrimination,

Family Planning, among others.

She is also the co-author

and presenter of the TV show

"Príncipes do Nada" on RTP, which deals with themes

related to Human Rights. Another one of her shows

that I most enjoyed seeing is called

“Dar Vida sem Morrer”, where the presenter

made contact with several women in Guinea-Bissau

and which had the support of the Portuguese

Cooperation. This series of documentaries aimed to

gather financial support for programs to

reduce maternal and newborn mortality

in three locations in Guinea-Bissau. Some of this

Also, she is very beautiful!

Finally, I couldn't avoid talking about a

person I once knew. Her name is

Sara Sampaio and she is an international model.

She became known after winning a

well-known contest here in Portugal called

Cabelo Pantene, in 2007. It was around this

time that I came across her, in Lisbon, through

mutual friends. She always proved to be a

dear and down to earth girl.

As she was born in Porto, and so was I,

we got along well at the time and I even went out with her

once or twice, at night in Lisbon.

Later on, we lost contact, but I got to

know about Sara, as her popularity grew

more and more. In her career, she

has been photographed for several magazines such as Vogue,

GQ, Elle and many more. She also got the

job many models want - she was one

of the Angels for Victoria's Secret. In addition to fashion,

Sara Sampaio has also been successful in the

music world, having appeared in some music videos

by famous singers. Despite having become

a supermodel, and having moved to New

York, the *model* continues to visit family and friends

in Portugal, having recently celebrated

her 30th birthday here in northern Portugal.

And that's it, these are some of the Portuguese

celebrities that are still active and that I think

it's interesting for you to get to know about.
